On-going digitisation of the content industry: opportunities and challenges
From Telecoms Strategies & Trends
New online and mobile distribution models have emerged in the different content markets, for instance online personal
radios such as Last.fm in the music market; or e-book reding offers, such as Amazon's Kindle service, in the publishing market.
Increasing broadband adoption and accelerating device innovation (e.g. Apple's iPod or iPhone smartphone) have driven the
consumer demand for new online content services and applications. Yet, sound and compelling business models have still
to be found. Indeed, the monetisation of online and mobile content is far from obvious and unfortunately, advertising
has not delivered the promised answers. Content markets are at crossroads: the stakes are surely high, but companies
that take up the digital challenge will discover it is worth it on longer term.

Orange UK and T-Mobile UK to merge in 2010
From Telecoms Strategies & Trends
Each of the four — out of five — mobile operators in the UK had almost a quarter share of the 78.1 mn mobile subscribers
(3Q09) indicating intense competition in the market. However, the mobile market structure in the UK is expected to change
as Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom, which respectively own the third and fourth largest mobile operators T-Mobile UK
and Orange UK, are to merge their mobile operations in the country in a 50:50 joint venture company. Should the merger,
which is awaiting approval from relevant authorities, push through in 1H10, it will create the largest mobile operator
in the UK with approximately a 42% share of the mobile subscriber base.

Eastern European markets still driven by mobile and broadband services
From Teleseeq Interactive Dataroom
The net service revenues of the Eastern European telecommunications market are expected to have grown
by 7.3% y-o-y, from €60.8bn in 2008 to €65.3bn in 2009. Among the different sectors, only fixed telephony
revenues are forecasted to have declined. And are expected to show a decrease at a rate of over 2% y-o-y
due to continuous fixed to mobile substitution, falling tariffs and fixed-line cancellation. Meanwhile,
the datacom and mobile revenues of the region are projected to have increased by 15% and 9%, respectively.
These growths are attributed to the continued take up of broadband services in Eastern Europe as well as
to the increase in the mobile penetration rate of the region — from over 110% in 2008 to nearly 117% in
2009 — as well as a steady raise in the ARPU. It is expected that the datacom and mobile sectors will
continue to be the driving factors for the growth of the Eastern European telecommunications market.

More vivid experience leads innovation in 2H09
From Telecom Innovations Spotlights — Strategic Overview
The promise of a richer, better and more realistic communication experience was driving innovations in the second half
of 2009. In the mobile sector, South Korean telecoms operators were the first to integrate Rich Communication Suite
(RCS) with their mobile services. RCS provides users with enhanced address book, messaging and enriched call services
which can be interoperable with other networks. In the meantime, mobile operator Orange launched the first High
Definition (HD) voice service that uses Wideband Adaptive Multi-rate (WB-AMR) speech codec, which has a wider
speech bandwidth compared to the current narrowband speech codec used. In the broadcast sector, UK will be the
first country to experience 3D TV with Sky, a satellite and CaTV operator, launching the service this 2010.

Further decline in fixed line traffic volume and revenues in Western Europe
From Quartely Fixed Line Traffic Monitoring Service
Western Europe continues to experience a restless decline in fixed telephony call volume and revenues. Decline in fixed telephony
traffic is still impacted by the growing usage of mobile telephony and continuous decline in the volume of Internet dial-up
minutes. While call usage generated via traditional fixed telephony (PSTN and ISDN) has been declining, calls through the
Internet (VoIP) has been exhibiting growth, although the significant increases in VoIP usage was still not able to mitigate
further losses in traffic generated from fixed voice services*. In France, for instance, VoIP usage is growing about 10%
year-on-year (2Q08 to 2Q09) while the total fixed voice minutes in the country still posted a decline by over 5% year-on-year
(2Q08 to 2Q09).
Strategies used by telecom operators and regulators in order to curb losses in the fixed telephony sector
include bundling schemes and specific discounted tariffs for fixed calls. For instance, Telenor began
offering lower call rates for calls made from fixed lines to other non-Telenor mobile networks in Norway.
In Germany, Deutsche Telekom offers special flat rates for calls made from its fixed network towards its
mobile network. Other carriers, such as TeliaSonera, despite efforts to mitigate further revenue decline
by increasing tariffs (1H09), experienced total fixed telephony revenues decreasing further by 15% (2Q08 to 2Q09).
*Note: According ro Teleseeq’s definition, fixed telephony traffic volume includes VoIP calls.
