Fixed line monitoring in Eastern Europe
From quarterly monitoring service

In Eastern Europe total telephone channels decreased by 0.3%. Stagnation of the fixed telephony market was partly due to the impact of mobile substitution. On average, the mobile markets in Eastern Europe comprised of 3-4 carriers. Consequently in some countries, mobile telephony services were more readily available than fixed telephony and there has been more pressure to drive down mobile prices. Currently, mobile penetration stood at 96%. Another cause of the stagnation was the limited competition in terms of access channels despite the introduction of market liberalisation in most of the countries monitored. In 4Q07, the incumbents of Serbia and Montenegro maintained their monopoly. Meanwhile, Croatia and Slovakia's alternative operators had about 1%. In Slovenia, the market share of the alternative operators increased significantly from 0.4% in 2006 to 6.6% in 2007. Nevertheless, Telekom Slovenije still retains more than 90% share of the market.

Fixed line monitoring in ROW
Quarterly Fixed Line Monitoring Service

Among the countries monitored, Japan had the highest share of VoIP representing 21.4% of telephony channels followed by South Korea with 5.7%. Despite both countries having the highest broadband penetration in the world, VoIP adoption has evolved differently. A primary reason for this is the regulatory situation in each market. In Japan for instance, fixed line number portability is applicable to VoIP services hence making it more convenient for the user to switch from POTS to VoIP. In South Korea, fixed line number portability will only be effective in 2008.

InfoCom - Ad-hoc study on satellite set-top-boxes
From InfoCom´s custom study

According to recent research carried out by InfoCom, the worldwide market for satellite set-top-boxes enabling the reception of satellite TV channels reached nearly $5bn in 2007, a 13% growth over 2006. Developing countries in Asia (i.e. excluding Japan), Latin America and also to a lesser degree in the Middle East and Africa, are clearly driving the market with 29% growth over 2006. These regions will continue to grow much faster than average in the coming years and are thus expected to represent 63% of the worldwide market in 2012, compared to only 48% in 2007.

International voice traffic maintains growth in Western Europe
From quarterly monitoring service

Despite the falling fixed line traffic volume in Western Europe, the international voice traffic seems to have been spared of such trend in 2007. According to InfoCom evaluation, international traffic volume in the region exhibited an 8.8% year-on-year growth, posting 50.4bn minutes in 2007. France, Germany and Sweden were among these countries that demonstrated a double digit year-on-year increase. France generated a total of 6.4bn international voice minutes in 2007 or 31.2% annual growth – brought about by increasing participation of calls originating from IP telephony services to international destinations. In Germany, international voice traffic increased by 20.9% year-on-year as a result of German operators’ effort to drive the volume usage up. Deutsche Telekom, for instance, had a 35% tariff cut for calls to international numbers between 2006 and 2007. Sweden experienced 11.9% annual growth in international voice minutes, which can also be attributed to decreasing tariffs. According to the Swedish regulator, average revenue per minute for international calls decreased by 11% from 1H06 to 1H07.

European mobile users continued to increase in number during 2007
From Teleseeq database and Quarterly Mobile Monitoring Service: Subscriber Market Shares

The total number of mobile subscribers of the countries monitored in Western Europe reached 476mn in 4Q07, an 8.9% increase over 4Q06. Eastern Europe exhibited a higher YoY growth of 14.4% as the total number of mobile subscribers in the countries monitored in Eastern Europe reached 390mn in 4Q07.

In Western Europe, Greece and Germany recorded the highest YoY growth with 15.3% and 13.4% respectively. This growth may be attributed to the incumbent’s efforts in these countries. In Greece, Cosmote contributed almost 50% of the total country net additions during 2007 due to the increase in Cosmote’s contract subscriber base as well as the efforts of Germanos, a mobile retailer which Cosmote acquired in 2006. In Germany, T-Mobile contributed around 40% of the total country net additions for 2007. T-Mobile’s growth was driven by its new activation policy and the introduction of the myFaves calling plan and Apple's iPhone in late 2007.

In Eastern Europe, Montenegro exhibited the strongest YoY growth in mobile subscribers at 57% followed by Macedonia at 37% and Serbia at 32%. The growth in these countries may be attributed to the increase in competition. The launch of Telekom Srbija's mobile subsidiary MTEL in Macedonia, and Telekom Austria's launch of mobile services in Serbia and Montenegro under the Vip brand during 3Q07 increased the number of mobile operators in these countries to 3.

Mobile market continues to grow in Asia
From Teleseeq database and Quarterly Mobile Monitoring Service: Subscriber Market Shares

There were a little more than 1bn mobile subscribers in Asia in 2006. It grew by 24% that saw its total rise to 1.3bn in 2007, with most countries exhibiting a positive growth during the year. Chinese mobile subscribers account for more than 42% of the region's total with 547mn followed by India with 17% at 224mn. Both countries added a collective 168mn subscribers in 2007. On the other hand, Japan had its 100 millionth subscriber in 1Q07 to finish the year at 105mn. Meanwhile, South Korean mobile carriers may have more competition to face as a bill is expected to be passed to the parliament to allow MVNOs to penetrate the market. Several new operators are also set to launch in 2008 like U Mobile in Malaysia, Bharti Airtel in Sri Lanka and SLD Telecom in Cambodia. Overall mobile subscriber penetration currently stands at 34%, up by 6 percentage points from last year. It still leaves a great room for further growth especially in developing countries.
