Stuttgart, Germany — 10th December, 2007 — According to the newest edition of Mobile Quarterly Monitoring — Subscriber Market Share, from InfoCom, the independent market analyst specialist, during 2Q07, the merger and acquisition activities of telecom companies and groups as well as the entry of new market players had a significant impact on the market shares based on subscribers of several mobile operators in Asia as well as the US. In Japan, despite a high competitive environment, since 2Q07 a new carrier started operations, eMobile. Since its launch the Japanese operator has gained some 60 000 subscribers with services currently available in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
Fig. 1- Subscriber penetration rates in a selection of Asian countries (2004-2008). The coverage of the mobile monitoring service was enlarged with Hong Kong, Singapore and Turkey. Hong Kong and Singapore are two of the most active mobile markets in Asia with penetration rates of about 123% and 137% in 2Q07, respectively. In Turkey, Turkcell dominates the mobile market with 33.8m customers as of 2Q07; the other player Telsim changed its name into Vodafone Turkey in March 2007 following Vodafone’s acquisition of the company in 2006. In the United States, AT&T Mobility remained the mobile market leader with a share of about 27% followed closely by Verizon Wireless with 26%. More than 2.79m of the 4.18m net additions for the quarter belonged to these operators.
The mobile market in Brazil has reached a penetration rate of more than 55% compared to the same period last year with just 48%. It has become one of the fast-growing markets in the world and it is seen to reach about 110m subscribers by end-2007.
