Incumbent market share for fixed voice business traffic under pressure

Stuttgart, Germany – 27th June, 2006 – Although incumbent operators in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK continue to have a significant, even sometimes a dominant, market share for fixed voice business traffic in 1Q06, in some countries, alternative operators continue to gain momentum.

Among these five incumbents, Telecom Italia proves that it still has a stronghold in this market segment with 76% of business voice traffic, while Spain’s Telefonica follows second with 66% and France Telecom still achieves a 62% market share.

On the other hand, BT faces more challenges with main competitors such as Colt, C&W, ntl:Telewest and Verizon. As a result, BT represents today only 44% of the overall fixed voice business traffic in the UK. But also in Germany, where competition have been introduced much later than in the UK, Deutsche Telekom reaches only 55% of the overall fixed voice business market in 1Q06.
