The mobile service market in Germany

The German mobile telecom market has recorded a significant change over the past three years. The turnaround happened in 1998 with the introduction of pre-paid services. With operators' strategies more and more focused on increasing their user base through pre-paid packages, call tariffs and, subsequently, ARPU (Average Revenues Per User) began to fall - initiating a price war that contributed to the spread of mobile services to the mass market. Consequently, over the period 1998-2000, while total country revenues for mobile services were growing at about 49% a year, the number of users was growing at over 88% a year during the same period.
