In tune with the gloomy atmosphere currently prevailing in the telecommunications and information technology sectors, the future of ADSL raises many questions. It seems therefore relevant to present an overall picture of the situation, especially because the past months have seen a dramatic restructuring of players which may now leave room for the definition of longer term strategies, in relation to geo-economic considerations and also to usage prospects.
Networking issues
By the very nature of this technology, the deployment of ADSL services depends on several factors:
the quality of copper lines that qualifies for DSL upgrade;
the competitive availability of the local loop and consequent market strategies, as well as the impact of alternative solutions such as cable modems;
the availability of money to finance the deployment of equipment, in particular of DSLAMs, in connection to market considerations.
