The World Top-20 operators

In 2000, the Japanese operator NTT is placed again in its consolidated, traditional position as the World's largest operator of telecommunications services (Fig. 1). NTT recorded revenues of over US$82 billion, well ahead of the second ranked carrier, US operator Verizon - totalling about US$53 billion - which in turn ousted SBC to third position. Verizon Communications is the result of the merger between the two US operators Bell Atlantic and GTE. The new carrier also includes the mobile activities of AirTouch Wireless and PrimeCo Personal Communications through Verizon Wireless, in which the UK mobile operator Vodafone holds a 40% stake.
