While mobile and wireless technologies have stolen headlines for some time, today one rediscovers the pervasiveness of fixed access - particularly in industrialised economies. Regarding main lines, they are approaching saturation and their number has been stagnating in industrialised economies. It is interesting to note, however, that the saturation level can vary from a ratio around 50-60 lines per 100 inhabitants to an upper-range penetration ratio of 70% in some countries, and to see that these countries are characterised by a relatively high Internet user penetration.
