Introduction
Pierre Omidyar, founder and chairman of eBay, is a French born computer programmer, who launched an online auction service called "Auction Web" on Labour Day, 1995. The company was then incorporated in California in May 1996 and renamed eBay in 1997. A former Hasbro executive, Margaret Whitman, joined the company in January 1998, and succeeded Mr. Omidyar as CEO. Later that year in September, eBay went public on the NASDAQ exchange.
