The story of Telecom Italia (TI) started quietly in the early-90s, as for other
European incumbents, when, after restructuring, the operators started to be privatised.
Telecom Italia’s adventure began precisely in 1994 when, under the
"telecommunications restructuring plan", the then five Italian telecom companies
– Sip, IRITEL, ITALCABLE, TELESPAZIO and SIRM – were merged to form
Telecom Italia. Later on, satellite operations were incorporated as a spin-off into
Nuova Telespazio and in 1995 Telecom Italia Mobile S.p.A. (TIM) took over the
mobile services. Two years later, with the incorporation of Telecom Italia, the new
company was ready for its privatisation and the IPO of the shares held by the
