Korea Telecom was established as a state-owned incumbent in 1981 through the
enactment of the Korea Telecom Act. The company officially took over the
telecommunications business being operated by the government through the
Korean Ministry of Information & Communication (MIC - formerly Ministry of
Communication) in 1982. In 1997 the Korea Telecom Act was repealed and
Korea Telecom became a corporation with limited liability under the Commercial
Code of 1997. In 2002, the company renamed itself KT Corporation.
