Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) experienced a period of hype during the late
1990s but along with the dot.com crash the faith in VoIP as a service for residential
or indeed business customers was temporarily lost. It appeared like the technology
would never get a real start. Several companies invested in VoIP and started offering
it to both corporate customers as well as residential customers.
Later on, these companies had to change their strategy and focus
on more profitable services and technologies.
