Who had heard of Mr. Scaglia and his company, Fastweb, two years ago? Hardly anybody indeed. In 1999, leaving Italian mobile phone operator Omnitel, now part of Vodafone, Mr. Scaglia started Fastweb (then called e.Biscom), at a time when, in Italy at least, everybody was convinced that competition based on its own infrastructure was not possible and that investments on alternative networks would never pay-off. Undoubtedly, many thought that Fastweb was Mr. Scaglia‘s need for personal adventure, running after a dream of a fibre network reaching all the way to people's homes.
