Market snapshot: South Korea
South Korea’s telecommunications industry has undergone radical changes since
the liberalisation of the market in the late 1980s. In 1996, a commercial deployment of the CDMA technology began and by 2003,
the mobile sector overtook the fixed line sector in terms of revenues. In 2005, the country was one of the
world leaders in terms of broadband penetration (Iceland may have overtaken
South Korea as the leading broadband nation, while the Netherlands and Denmark are close behind).
As a result of these changes, South Korea has one of
the most advanced telecommunications industry in the world. This article aims to
provide an overview of the fixed, mobile, Internet and data communication sectors in South Korea.
