The new AT&T: a return to the Bell System?


Recent activities in the United States telecom sector show a trend of mergers and acquisitions among telecom companies. Of these, the AT&T-SBC merger has had the greatest impact as it involved two of the top-5 telecom companies, and made the merged company the largest, based on revenues, in 2005. The merger also started a wave of rumours on the reconstitution of the Bell System; rumours which are now being reinforced as AT&T-SBC and BellSouth currently hold negotiations for a possible merger.
