2Q07 mobile overviewy
Although four of the Top-5 Western European countries had already reached 100%
mobile penetration in 2Q06, Fig. 1 shows that their penetration rates continued to
rise until 2Q07. Italy exhibited the highest growth in penetration with an increase of
16 percentage points compared to 2Q06 while Germany had the second highest
increase with 11 percentage points. Despite registering an increase of roughly 5
percentage points, which was a slightly higher increase in penetration than the UK,
France continued to remain below the 100% range during 2Q07. The still increasing
penetration rates in Italy, the UK, Germany and Spain may be attributed mainly
to the increase in the number of people who use two or more SIM cards and
mobile phones but possibly also to some inactive customers.
