Over the past few years, the cable industry has undergone many changes, and more are to come. For years, especially in Europe, the cable TV industry was subject to a tight regulatory regime and, to a large degree, was seen as a public utility.
One of the major changes was therefore the liberalisation and deregulation of telecom markets, which allowed cable operators to compete with traditional telecommunications companies.
With network digitisation, cable operators have also been able to offer more choice and better quality to their subscribers.
Finally, the growth of the Internet has created a new opportunity for cable operators to provide broadband access to households and businesses.
