This article provides an overview of the situation of telecommunications services in Eastern European countries. Many of these countries are undergoing radical changes initiated at the beginning of the last decade. This radical changes concern the transition of centrally planned economies toward more liberalised economies based on free markets, changes in the political systems and in societies. The telecommunications sector has obtained a more important role than in the past and serves as an instrument to build up communication structures across the countries to foster economic and social development.
